Charley Patton was the first great Delta bluesman. He reportedly had
a total of eight wives. His family moved from the Mississippi hill country to the Delta to work on the Dockery plantation when he was a young boy. He became one of the Delta's most popular bluesmen around 1915 and recorded his first song "Pony Blues" for Paramont Records in 1929. He died of a heart condition in 1934. Patton was inducted into the Blues Foundation's Hall of Fame in 1980.
